Beauty Matters
Why Skin Ages . . .
Scientists have now proven that exposure to the elements like sun, smoke and air pollution can cause premature wrinkling, age spots and other signs of aging. New research specifically shows that UVA rays, one section of the sun's radiation, are responsible for premature signs of aging.
Here are some important facts you should know about UVA radiation...
- UVA rays generate free radicals that break down collagen and cause premature aging.
- UVA rays cause DNA mutations that lead to aggressive forms of skin cancers.
- UVA rays go to all layers of the skin. UVB rays go no deeper than the outer layers of the skin.
- UVA rays penetrate glass, and are present all year-round and are 1000X more plentiful than UVB rays.
- Most sunscreens don't completely protect you from UVA rays.
What can I do to protect my skin?
Use Broad-spectrum sunscreens UVA / UVB (look for zinc oxide &titanium dioxide). Use Antioxidants topically on the skin (vitamin C). Many techniques are available to repair skin damage, but daily maintenance strategies are needed to help skin look good.
Why do we need to apply topical Antioxidants? Why do we need to use broad-spectrum sunscreen?
Our body uses antioxidants to neutralise oxygen-free radicals before they can cause damage, however, they are used in the process, must be replaced and body stores are limited and tightly controlled. The beauty of topical antioxidants is that they add to nature's own way of protecting the skin, and provide a way to get significantly greater amounts into skin than at all possible through dietary intake and oral supplements
Topical Antioxidants such as SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic / Serum 10 help neutralise free radicals, lighten skin, stimulate collagen and are anti-inflammatory as well as improve overall skin health.
The sunscreens used at The Laser and Skin Clinic contain ingredients like Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide which offer broad-spectrum coverage. There is no sunscreen on the market that gives you the entire coverage apart from the pure Zinc Oxide you see Cricketer's wear! Our sunscreens are cosmetically elegant so they feel nice to we ar. UVA is around 365 days a year and therefore, sunscreen should be worn 365 days a year as those UVA rays can penetrate through cloud and glass - yes, even when it's raining or snowing you need to wear sunscreen. Don't think of it as sun - think of your protection as protection against UV damage!
